This is my electronic photo album on Mission San Juan Capistrano, the Jewel of the California Spanish missions. Mission San Juan Capistrano was founded by Fray Junipero Serra on November 1, 1776, and has become the most popular of all the California missions. Today, it is one of the Golden State's most important historical, cultural and learning centers.
Mission San Juan Capistrano is the seventh of twenty one Spanish Missions that were established in California by Spanish Franciscan Friars. It was named after St. John Capestrano, an Italian warrior priest in the 15th Century. In 2000, Pope John Paul II decreed that the Mission Church be honored with the title "Basilica".
The annual return of the American Cliff Swallow, a migratory bird, from its winter nesting ground in Goya, Argentina to the Mission San Juan Capistrano, is a major tourism destination milestone in the United States. The famous swallows fly south on October 23rd and return on March 19th. They arrive at the Mission in groups and make their nests from mud and saliva, building them under the eaves of the Mission buildings.
Legend says that the celebrated swallows took up residence at the Mission to escape an innkeeper who kept destroying their nests.
