MISSION SANTA BARBARA

This is my electronic photo album on Mission Santa Barbara, one of the most popular California Spanish missions. Also known as the Santa Barbara Mission, it was founded on December 4, 1786, the feast day of Saint Barbara, by Franciscan missionaries. It is the tenth mission in a series of Spanish missions that were established by Spanish friars led by Fray Junipero Serra on the west coast of the Spanish Empire in the New World and later became part of the Republic of Mexico.

Mission Santa Barbara's name came from the legend of Saint Barbara, a girl who was beheaded by her father for following the Christian faith. The early missionaries built three different chapels during the first few years, each larger than the previous one. It was only after the great Santa Barbara Earthquake on December 21, 1812, which destroyed the existing buildings, that the construction on the current Mission was begun. It was completed and then dedicated in 1820. The towers were considerably damaged in the June 29, 1925 earthquake, but were subsequently rebuilt in 1927. The appearance of the interior of the church has not been altered significantly since 1820.

Thank you for visiting my photo blog. There are so many California tourist attractions, it’s hard to know where to begin. From Sea World-San Diego in the south to majestic Mt. Shasta near its northern border, California is without a doubt a vacationer’s paradise. I hope that my photos have given you a glimpse of the immense beauty and wonder of the Golden State.
