MORRO BAY, CALIFORNIA

This is my electronic photo album on Morro Bay, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Central Coast of California. A tranquil place to discover one's better nature, Morro Bay is located midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. This historic fishing village has one of the most distinctive and recognizable landmarks in the Golden State, the famous Morro Rock.

In 1543, Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo named Morro Bay's magnificant landmark "El Morro". Cabrillo, who explored the Pacific Coast for Spain, chose the name "El Morro" because it resembled the head of a Moor, the North African people known for the turbans that they wear. The Moors invaded and conquered Southern Spain for over 600 years.

Morro Rock is also sometimes called the "Gibraltar of the Pacific". It is the last of a line of long-extinct volcanoes formed about 19 million years ago, which include nine peaks ranging from San Luis Obispo to Morro Bay. These peaks are named the Nine Sisters because they are all in a row and in close proximity. Morro Rock is a state historic landmark, a bird sanctuary and home to nesting Peregrine Falcons.

The first recorded Filipino immigrants to North America arrived on October 18, 1587, from the Spanish galleon, Nuestra Senora de Esperanza. At that time, California was a part of the Spanish Empire in the New World and later became part of the Republic of Mexico.

Thank you for visiting my photo blog. There are so many California tourist attractions, it’s hard to know where to begin. From Sea World-San Diego in the south to majestic Mt. Shasta near its northern border, California is without a doubt a vacationer’s paradise. I hope that my photos have given you a glimpse of the immense beauty and wonder of the Golden State.
