DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA

This is my electronic photo album on Los Angeles, the second most populous city in the United States, after New York City. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the whole world. LA, nicknamed The City of Angels,  is a global city and the most ethnically diverse city in the nation.

In 1542, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, a Portuguese explorer who was sailing up the coast in search of a new passage to Asia, claimed the Southern California region for the Kingdom of Spain. In 1771, Franciscan friar, Junipero Sera, built the first Spanish mission in Los Angeles, Mission San Gabriel Arcangel. In 1781, a group of Spanish settlers established a small settlement called "El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles" (the Town of Our Lady, the Queen of Angels).

In 1821, New Spain achieved independence from the Spanish Empire and became the Republic of Mexico. Los Angeles became the capital of the Mexican state of Alta California. In 1848, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican-American War and Alta California was ceded to the United States. In 1850, California was admitted as the 31st state in the nation.

Thank you for visiting my photo blog. There are so many California tourist attractions, it’s hard to know where to begin. From Sea World-San Diego in the south to majestic Mt. Shasta near its northern border, California is without a doubt a vacationer’s paradise. I hope that my photos have given you a glimpse of the immense beauty and wonder of the Golden State.
