RICHARD NIXON PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY AND MUSEUM

This is my electronic photo album on the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum in Yorba Linda, California. President Nixon had one of the most interesting political careers in the history of the United States. He was re-elected as President by one of the largest margins of victory in 1972 but became the only President to resign from office less than two years later because of the Watergate scandal.

Richard Nixon's meteoric rise in US politics began in 1948 when he won as a US Congressman in California . In 1950, he won the vacant US Senate seat from California. In 1952, Dwight D. Eisenhower won as President with Nixon as his Vice President. They were re-elected in 1956. In 1960, Nixon lost his presidential bid against John F. Kennedy by the slimmest of margins.

In 1968, Nixon won the presidency against Hubert H. Humphrey. Once in office, Nixon unveiled the policy of "Vietnamization" to end the Vietnam War. Accordingly, US troops strength in Vietnam fell from 543,000 in April 1969 to zero in March 1973.

President Nixon's greatest accomplishments were in foreign policy. He established a new era of relations with the People's Republic of China by meeting with Mao Zedong and Zhou En Lai in Beijing in February 1972. In May 1972, he met with Leonid Brezhnev in Moscow and negotiated the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty.

In 1972, President Nixon won an overwhelming victory against George McGovern and was re-elected as US President. However, because of the Watergate Scandal, he resigned from the presidency on August 9, 1974 and was succeeded by Gerald Ford. On September 8, 1974, President Ford pardoned Nixon for "all offenses against the United States that he committed,  may have committed or taken part in" during his presidency.

Shasta near its northern border, California is without a doubt a vacationer’s paradise. I hope that my photos have given you a glimpse of the immense beauty and wonder of the Golden State.
